Can you give me information on Starved Rock? |
Travel Info I've looked through the website of the park, read reviews, etc., but I still have a few questions: *I am going there over Memorial Day weekend with a few friends. Will it be annoyingly crowded, or are there places to get away from people? I really need to get away from people. I can handle a few, as long as I can eventually lose myself in the woods (not literally). *Do you know the places in the park I should not miss, especially in early spring? Thanks! Travel Tips The park is big, but the main part of the park can get quite crowded. There are walking paths that you can get away from people. Unfortunately all the parts you shouldn't miss will be very crowded that weekend. Others i have no idea what you are talking about! It'll be a bit crowded, but the park is huge, and if you hike in far enough, you'll be mostly alone. There is another option - just south of Starved Rock is Matthiasen State Park. It's equally as pretty, especially the dunes area, and much less popular - a good way to get away from people and still see the amazing bluffs, cliffs, and waterfalls that Starved Rock has. It'll probably be crowded, sorry to say. Memorial Day weekend is pretty big. That being said, the area is so big that you might not be overrun by other people. There are so many trails that you may only see a few people along the way and even find a secluded spots. There's more than one path so flip an coin and head out! As for don't-miss spots, it's gotta be this little waterfall that cuts between the rocks. It's pretty cool. It's almost like a little cave and you have to walk along a rocky path with a little stream going through, but it's worth it. I don't remember exactly how to get there but ask one of the park officials. And you have to see the official "starved rock", the place where (as the story goes), Indians held out for as long as they could during a battle until they, well, starved to death. hence the name. The area down by the river might be crowded. A lot of people fish there even when it's not Memorial Day. There's also horseback riding too. The parking lot will be a b*tch to get in and out of, I'm guessing. But overall you should be able to have some seclusion there. Like I said, it's a big area. I was just there last weekend! I thought it would be really crowded since it was Mother's Day weekend, but it wasn't that bad. It's been very dry, so most of the creek beds are dried up. There are a couple with rust-colored water (very scenic!), but there aren't really rushing waterfalls. If you want to get away from people, try to get there early and see the "Starved Rock" 1st thing. It's fairly close to the visitor's center. Then hike back to the car and move it to one of the parking lots on the far east side of the park. Most people stick to the area around the lodge and the visitor's center. Be sure to eat your Wheaties before you go! There are TONS of stairs. http://www.thelocaltourist.com/daytrips/... |
