Travel Info
We will be in Chicago Saturday and Sunday I would like to take him to see live jazz bc he plays bass. We are also looking for some off beat stuff that the locals like to do.We have all the museum info so it is the stuff a tourist doesnt see that we are looking for. thanks for all suggestions.

Travel Tips
Well, as far as jazz clubs, that might be kinda tough. The drinking age here is 21 and most clubs are drinking establishments as well as jazz clubs. so he probably won't be able to get in. The best jazz clubs in the city, Green Mill and Andy's have a 21 and over policy. But that being said, there's a place called "heaven gallery" that has a jazz concert on Saturday, but it's at 10 p.m. Not familiar with the place, but you might want to give them a call to see what's up (773-342-4597). And the Northwestern Jazz Ensemble is playing on Saturday too (7:30 p.m.). I'm sure he could get in there, but it's a long haul up to Evanston, where the concert is being held.

You might have better luck on Sunday. There's a jazz orchestra playing at a place called FitzGeralds. It's a concert venue, bar and restaurant and I've seen kids there, so he can most likely get in there. But this one is kinda out of the way too. You can get there, but it might be a LOOONG cab ride.

As far as offbeat stuff, there are a lot of new comedy clubs cropping up you might want to check out. Besides Second City, there's the Improv Olympic (I.O.) near Wrigley Field. They have shows pretty much every night. Can't vouch for how "kid friendly" they are, so I hope he's a "mature" 18 year old. There's a Best of Second City show Saturday at 4 p.m. And at a place called The Playground Theater, they do a Saturday night show called "Don't Spit the Water" where audience members are brought on stage and hold water in their mouths and comedians try to make them spit it out (yeah, I know...). On Sunday, the Annoyance Theater has a show called "Dr. Amazing, Your Country Needs You" about Space Nazis who try to take over the world but are defeated by "the smartest man in the world".

Elsewhere, there are boat tours (stop by Navy Pier or the Chicago River near Tribune Tower), bus tours (across the street from the Art Institute), The Weber Grill Restaurant Firehouse Cook Off on Saturday (free to the public at 539 N. State, 10 a.m.), Uncle Fun's, a vintage toy store on West Belmont ave., walking around Wicker Park and windown shopping or real shopping, the Lincoln Park zoo, Galaxie Game Days at The Galaxie Chicago (2603 W. Barry), where you can play old board games and old video games like Space Invaders, a free tour of famous Chicago movie locations (Sunday at 11 a.m. - 312-744-3315), The Garfield Park Conservatory (a giant greenhouse... not that boring, actually), Second City Training Center open house (where students ages 4-18 will perform skits they've written- Saturday, 9-11 a.m.), Cubs vs. White Sox (if you can get a ticket from a scalper... this series is always a biggie and probably sold out) or just walking along the bike path on the lake front. You can rent bikes at Navy Pier and ride up and down the path for a while. It's usually crowded with people biking, rollerblading or running, so you have to be alert. But is a cool view of the city that most tourists don't bother to see.

Most of the places listed have websites, so you can do a search to find out more.

hope that helps.
Others
alot of the good clubs are 21 and over
If the kid is 18 trust me the last thing on their mind is jazz unless he/she is really mature. Check out the Buddha Lounge off of downtown. Go to the top of the Sears Tower, take him to the Water tower or on MI. avenue for sight seeing and shopping. Pick any restaurant for a great treat. I like to have lunch at the Cheesecake Factory - yes they sell real food my favorites are the pizza and the Pork Chop dinner.

Catch a game if one is going on
Go to a museum on museum row/alley (field, art, planetarium, science, etc.)
Take him to Navy Pier *
Go on a boat ride (lunch/dinner/sightseeing)
Ride a double decker bus for a tour
Tour the Frank L. Wright homes
Check out this website. I love that place. http://hothouse.net/

Also, Check out this guys website. He plays trumpet but his band consists of a sax, drummer, and a bass player. They are really good. They might be playing somewhere this weekend too. coreywilkes.com
