What parts of Chicago are dangerous? |
Travel Info I've never been there....what areas should I stay away from? Travel Tips Uptown, Edgewater and Rogers Park to the north. Anything on the west side that's south of Fullerton. Englewood and all points east of Cicero Avenue on the south (there are pockets of nice in there, but the SW is much better). Wrigley Field good...Comiskey Park bad. Others All of them. City Hall. Wow, if you avoid Uptown and Rogers Park, you're missing out. I'm not kidding. Only avoid them if you only desire to see a whitewashed Chicago. And if that is the case, you're not really seeing Chicago. Rogers Park and Edgewater are home to large Indian, Jamaican and African communities. Uptown is one of the nation's (and thus, the world's) most ethnically diverse neighborhoods. I would choose Uptown over tourist-trap Chinatown anyday if I wanted some good Chinese or Vietnamese fare. In Uptown, you must try the pho (prounounced "fuh," it's a delicious beef soup with bean sprouts, lime and an herb similar to cilantro) at Tank, on the corner of Broadway and Argyle! Sox Park (Comiskey, or as the newspapers call it, "U.S. Cellular Field") is in Bridgeport, a family-oriented neighborhood from which Da Mayor and Da Mayor's dad (who was also Da Mayor, before he died) hails. However, there isn't a ton for a visitor to do in Bridgeport. I wouldn't consider the area overtly "dangerous," but it is a place where one should exercise caution, which is what you should do anywhere you go. Chicago has been New Yorkified to the hilt. You might be in a shady area here, but take five steps, and you're in the hippest, swingingest new place to be. I'm hardly exaggerating. If you're coming to Chicago, you have to use common sense and caution wherever you are. Dress in something nicer than sweatpants, and don't go exposing every inch of your skin. Wear shoes you can actually walk in. Be respectful but confident. Don't hog the sidewalks. Some public-transit etiquette: When riding the CTA, keep one person to one seat, please. The sets of seats are not your personal chaise, especially when the bus or el is crowded. Your bags can be kept on your lap or on the floor by your knees or to the side. They do not need their own seat. I would only advise you to avoid the Far South and West sides (the West Side is not to be confused with the Northwest Side and/or Southwest Side, both of which are separate regions). Most important: Enjoy yourself! Have fun. Generally the far west and far south sides are the most dangerous. Truth is, the chances of you being in or wandering into those areas are slim, unless you specifically go there for some odd reason. The touristy areas, and the areas where most people live - the north side, downtown, Michigan Avenue, etc. are generally safe and miles away from the more dangerous parts of Chicago. Rogers Park....I went to college there, it was fine..but at night its better to walk with someone. Edgewater is going through a renovation, cleaning up crappy apartments, etc .[I was just reading about this in an interesting article] For dangerous, the far south side and far west side... but tourists rarely go there anyway.. if youre going to the Art Institute, Shedd Aquarium, Millenium park, shopping on Michigan Ave, Lincoln park zoo, Navy Pier, Sears Towr, Chicago River boat tour...youll be fine. There are dangerous parts that others have mentioned but it is very important to be alert and aware of your surroundings. Criminals like tourist areas to catch their unsuspecting victims. Keep your wallet/belongings close, keep your head up, stay in well lit areas, etc. Have fun! |
