Is it safe in university of chicago ?

I plan to stay in a guest house in UoC. I am a bit concerned because I have read that the south side of Chicago is not the safest place.
I have to attend a conference in the downtown. I am considering this accomodation because downtown accomodations are too expensive.
I can use a taxi to commute between UoC and downtown area if that is a safer option.
Your comments and opinion would be really helpful.

The area the University of Chicago itself is in is called Hyde Park, and that neighborhood is generally safe - it's the area extending between about Hyde Park Boulevard on the north to 62nd street on the south, from the lake west to about Cottage Grove. If the guest house is part of the university or in that area on the map, you'd be fine. Also, downtown access is easy - you don't have to use a taxi, you can use the Metra rail line at 55th-56th-57th Street (metrarail.com) and it'll take you right to downtown.

There are also hotels *near* but not in downtown that are relatively less expensive, if that is an option and you prefer not to stay further south, or you might check the Red Roof Inn on Ontario Street, which is often one of the cheaper hotels downtown. But again, I don't think you'll have a problem at the guest house if it's near the university itself.

Stick with plan A. UoC is safe. You will be comfortable. The taxi driver should use Lake Shore Drive, which is a main artery, to and from the campus.
University of Chicago is located in a vibrant South Side neighborhood called Hyde Park. Stick to Hyde Park and downtown. Some areas just outside of Hyde Park are said to be iffy. You should use caution there and in absolutely any part of Chicago. You should be fine.

Its safe right there, but I would not suggest that you wander south or west of the campus.

It is not safe in any part of Chicago. I hope you have a bulletproof vest and an armored personnel carrier.
