How does a warm weather girl survive winters in Chicago?

Travel Info
I am a young single chick (no kids) who's ready to move to a new city. I've heard so many wonderful things about Chicago and it's at the top of my list. Everyone is warning me about the winters in Chicago and I starting to worry. I've lived in cities where it snows once every 4-5 years, the temperature rarely goes below 30 in winter, and warm 6 months out of the year. I am a tough girl and can adapt easily. Just need to know the best ways to survive my first winter in the Windy City.

Travel Tips
Get yourself a warm winter jacket. Waterproof, windproof, and insulated. Colombia makes some great ones. Make sure you have plenty of sweaters and sweatshirts. Long underwear under your pants (especially jeans as they're really cold in the winter) are a lifesaver, avoid skirts and dresses if possible. Make sure you have a hat, scarf, and mittens (they'll keep your fingers warmer than gloves cause you can ball your hands up and move your fingers around) The stretchy gloves to go under your mittens if you need them. Make sure you have a blanket in your car in case you need it. A brush for the snow on your car window (don't brush it off with your hand or your mitten will be wet and your hand will get cold. Never put water (any temp.) on your windshield to clear the ice or snow, it will freeze to your windshield and be a bigger mess. Dress in layers if you're going to be outside for awhile. Hope this helps! Source(s): Personal Experience........I grew up in Minnesota and lived in Chicago for 2 years.
Other Travel Tips
1. you can go shopping, chi-town has great shops and malls, and they are heated so you will stay warm.
2. you can find a really cute nice mid-western guy to keep you warm
3. you can go to a taping of jerry springer, things always get heated in there.
Wear clothes in layers, or thermal underwear.
Go buy a heavy coat, and not one from where you are but one from Chicago. I live in Texas and I wore my "winter" coat home to CT and froze my fanny off.

Make friends and enjoy yourself
