How does Chicago shape american society?

Travel Tips
one thing chicago is well known for regarding its shaping of american culture is its part in the labor movement. it is an industrial city in a lot of ways, and a lot of important events in the history of the labor movement and is known as a working class city.
see this site: http://www.labortrail.org/

also, it's kind of famous for political corruption and as a center of organized crime, but those are more turn-of-the-century events than they are current (although i suppose some might argue with me).

Shape American society? I don't really understand the question. But I will tell you this... I am from Florida and I absolutely love Chicago. I've been there once on a road trip with my ex who is from IL. I've never been to that big of a city before and I fell in love. There's so much culture and so many things to see. I was like a little kid in a candy store with my camera! We went to the Shed Aquarium, the art institute, Virgin Records, hit a few small bars, and basically just walked around. We also found a small sushi place downtown that served martinis. I have to say, it was the best trip I have ever taken. I'm looking forward to visiting again. Oh, and the bands! Some of the best bands come from Chicago. I know I didn't really answer the question but, Chicago will always have a place in my heart.
My own experience :)
Time, space, opportunity, cultural center.

Chicago was in the right place at the right time. Early French explorers and traders made the place a magnet because of its location...the lake and the river

This has continued since then to form a megapolis that is in the center of the country with transportation links of all kinds to everywhere.

Chicago has always had jobs for anyone wanting to work. Jobs bring people here. The catalog industry thrived here until Walmart. Construction never stops. It is the home of many corporations, organizations, hospital, and universities.

These organizations, individuals and politicians founded the 53 museums, 2 great zoos, and activities in the park system. All of this is possible with a multi-layered transportation system that moves 9.8 million people every day to and from work, ball games, shopping, the beach etc.

Lastly, Chicago is a multi-cultural point of entry where jobs and opportunity is available to all.
Chicago revolutionized the meat packing industry, that is a fact. Also Pullman and the railroad industry, just to name a few
Yes, the lake and the river..Chicago came to exist because of them.

And I think of...
All the immigrants who went through Ellis Island who came to Chicago for jobs and a better life.

Many many Polish people came, and I think only Warsaw, Poland has more Poles than Chicago.
