Compare Chicago summer to Las Vegas? |
Travel Info I've read comments about how unbelievably hot it can be in Las Vegas during the summer (August in particular). I'm so bad with subjective things like that. I live in Chicago...can someone who is familiar with summer in Chicago please compare it to the Las Vegas heat, so I can better understand? Travel Tips Well, I grew up in Cleveland, which has similar summers to Chicago, and also lived in Las Vegas. When they say the heat in Vegas is a dry heat, they are right. The temperatures may seem ridiculous in the triple digits, but take it from me, it does not feel uncomfortable until it's over 110. Where as in the midwest, it's unbearable at 90 degrees because of the humidity. You will need to use air conditioning a lot in Vegas, and change some behaviors in summer, such as walking your dog really early, or really late. And it's not unusual to see a hoard of kids at the park at 10:00 at night, when it finally cools off. But mostly, it's mind over matter, if you let the heat bother you, it will. If you don't let it hinder you, you will hardly notice it. Others I have been to Chicago and Vegas both in the summer and they were very similiar! Year before last when chicago had a bad heatwave is when I went and it was hot! Nothing like the same. I have been to both Chicago and Las Vegas in August and they are not close to the same. Chicago is humid while LV is very dry. Add to that their is about 25-30 degrees difference between the two. You are very uncomfortable and sticky in Chicago but as long as you drink water you can function all day. Yes it's miserable, but livable. However you can't even go outside in LV it's so hot. You can't touch anything metal as it will burn you, the pavement will stick to your shoes. You wait until after the sun goes down to go out and even then it's hotter than in Chicago during the day. People didn't live in Las Vegas until air conditioning was invented. I've been to both during the summer and I would say that Las Vegas' heat is much hotter but you don't get that sticky, humid feeling that Chicago can sometimes have. When I was in Vegas in July last year, the temperature was between 105 and 112. The sun is very hot, consideribly hotter than it feels like in Chicago. Whoever says that desert heat is not as bad as midwest heat and humity is crazy. 105 is hot, no matter where you are. That said, everything in Las Vegas is air conditioned and if you stay at a place with a pool, you should be in good shape. Have fun! I am a Chicagoan and the heat in Chicago over the last few years has not been bad, even below normal. But in Vagas!!! Good God! Anybody that can walk more than 3 blocks in the dry heat hell during August is not human. Normal people would faint and die of heat stroke inside of 10 minutes after fainting! Texas and Arizona is no bonus either in the summer! It will feel hotter in Vegas but you will sweat a lot more in Chicago because of the humidity. Live in Chicago, and have been to Vegas 4 times. |
