Travel Info
are there any nice places for hiking/picnic 1.5 hr away from chicago? please tell me the name of the park/area and how far it is. ideally it would also have canoeing on a lake, or something fun like that. thanks!

Travel Tips
Starved Rock State Park and Matthiasen State Park, about 70 miles west of the city, have excellent hiking trails, some of which are surprisingly strenuous - there are actual hills!
Others
Starved Rock is a great place for hiking. It is near Utica, about 1.5 hours from Chicago.
Go to REI in Oakbrook Terrace or call them (630) 574-7700 they will tell you everything you want to know about hiking/outdoors in the Chicago area. I am sure they have books with some pictures of places you may want to go to.
The site below has about 15 locations for canoe rental. The first ones are within your travel max:

REI is a great resource for not only gear and clothes but also info and maps. An above answerer gives the Oakbrook info. there is another store recently moved to Northbrook:
