Is there anyway to set up a tent within the city of Chicago? |
Travel Info I'm going to the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago and my friends and I want to save money by camping out. It doesn't matter where we go, we just need a place to put our tent at night. Any ideas? Travel Tips Well, sometimes I see homeless people with makeshift tents and stuff in the parks, near the expressways, etc. I don't think the city officially condones or has camping areas in the city. Besides, it might be kinda dangerous. Homeless people do it because they HAVE to. Why not contact the Pitchfork people and ask them if there is an area on the grounds you can use. Since they're going to be there for several days, it isn't like eveyrthing has to be cleared out each night. But here's a link from a message board for Lollapalooza where they ask the same question. There is some interesting information. If you're strapped for cash, try a hostel. There's one located in downtown Chicago, right near public transportation and it's pretty cheap, especially for a group. From $27 to $33 per person per night. http://www.hichicago.org/ Source(s): Chgo does not allow tents in any park. You'll have to make a friend close to Union Park and use the back yard....but not a great residential neighborhood. First on the "official" list of prohibited items are tents: Prohibited items All attendees will be searched upon entering the festival grounds. The following items will not be allowed: Tents, flags, refunds or exchanges, lounge chairs, instruments, knives or other weapons, video cameras, audio recording devices, professional cameras, pets, food, beverages (other than sealed bottled water), drugs or drug paraphernalia. http://www.pitchforkmusicfestival.com/?p... The closest idea to a tent that the festival promoters have is a hostel: http://www.pitchforkmusicfestival.com/?p... The closest campsites from the city are one to two hours away. You'll still have to pay a fee to get a permit. http://www.chicagowildernessmag.org/issu... http://chicagowildernessmag.org/camping/... http://www.gocampingamerica.com/parksear... http://www.gocampingamerica.com/campgrou... If you want to find a (relatively) cheap motel in a decent neighborhood, check out the motels on Lincoln Avenue in the north side of the city, north of Foster Avenue. |
