But do some research on the neiborhoods. Some of the apartments you see may be cheap for a reason: no one wants to live there. Others The projects. No I am just kidding. Go to Craigslist.com I'd check around Lincoln Square. It's a little northwest of Wrigleyville. I've been there 5 years and it's an up and coming area. Lots of new restaurants and bars. We bought there 3 years ago, but got a sweet deal on a rehabed 3 bedroom place when we first moved there. Not sure if it's inflated yet, but I'd definately check it out. You might want to look for apartments in Bridgeport, Pilsen, Rogers Park and Edgewater. Bridgeport is my topic pick if your priority is something affordable in a relatively safe area. Not much there in terms of fun things to do, though. In Rogers Park and Edgewater, a decent studio will realistically cost you about $600/month, and that doesn't necessarily include utilities. They're handy locations, though, because of their proximity to the Red Line and the express buses headed to downtown. You might want to ignore listings for West Rogers Park if you're concerned about safety. Stay closer to the lake in that case. Late add: Bridgeport is a super traditional, predominantly white neighborhood. I'm not saying there are no people of other ethnicities living there, but there have been tensions in the past. My new vote, if that is a concern, goes to either Rogers Park or Edgewater (the two are next to each other, surround the Loyola University campus, are close to Northwestern University and are home to ethnically diverse communities). |
