pls advise...and are there other tricks/things to keep in mind when traveling by taxi in Chicago?

There is a flat rate for cab, no matter what company it's from.

The only trick with cabs is one you'd have to live here your whole life to master, mainly knowing your way around the city. If you cab driver is taking you down a route he knows will be longer or will run into traffic, thus taking more time, you won't know he's doing it if you're just some casual tourist in the city. For instance, if you know he's heading right into an intersection that is always crowded on a certain time of day, you can tell him to take a side street, then make a right, etc. to avoid it. You wouldn't know that if you're a tourist. I suppose you could study Chicago maps before you get here, but it would still be a problem.

Other than that, must make sure the meter isn't running when you get it. He's supposed to turn it on when he starts moving. or you can skip cabs altogether and take public transportation, at least during the day when it's safer. Lots cheaper.
