Travel Info What is the difference between a street and a boulevard and a road and an avenue.? Travel Tips A "boulevard" in Chgo is usually a tree lined avenue which passes through some major parks and has no truck traffic permitted...Jackson, Washington, Garfield Park and Michigan Boulevards. Not too many "roads." These are usually long routes from one city to another. They have been in existence since horse and buggy days...Sheridan Rd, River Rd, Waukegan Rd, Rand Rd, Milwaukee Rd...these were built on ancient Indian trails since they are seldom straight, direct routes but tend to follow the lay of the land and are sometimes next to water routes. I don't think there is a rule about streets and avenues but most Chgo "streets" run east to west and "avenues run north to south. There are however many exceptions...Chicago, and North Avenues run east to west...State ST runs north to south. Others Streets run north/south Avenues run east/west Blvd's are wide. I don't know what constitutes a road. Nothing of consequence. They are all thoroughfares. "Boulevard" and "avenue" suggest, but do not imply, wideness. "Road" suggests something rural, but again that isn't conclusive. Avenue used to denote An Avenue of Trees, so it was usually tree lined. |
