A good place to buy a cabin in IL or nearby? |
Travel Info My wife and I are new transplants to Chicago, IL. We are thinking about a first time purchase of a vacation home. What we have in mind is something that may be on a lake maybe with bike paths and such in the area. We are in our early 30s with a 2 year old son and another baby on the way. We would like to avoid flying to a get-away location. Rather, we would like to drive no more than 1 to 1.5 hours. We live in Chicagoland. What areas should we consider? We have no idea. Thanks. Travel Tips Southern Wisconsin is where most people go. Area around Lake Geneva is kind of packed... but south of there, there are more small lakes that are not so crowded. Anywhere in the Kettle Moraine area would have small lakes and woods. My parents are considering the Chain o' Lakes area (Western Lake County and Eastern McHenry County) in Illinois - real estate is getting hard to come by in Lake Co, but the Forest preserve district is better, preserving bike paths and trails nearby in case you actually find some land. The Starved Rock area in Illinois is also good - Utica, LaSalle, Peru. If you can find a cabin along the Illinois river, the views are quite good with sandstone bluffs. Others Southern Wisconsin, maybe out by Lake Geneva, would be a good place to look. We had a cabin in northern Wisconsin (Tomahawk area) that we absolutely loved. It's a bit longer of a drive, but the difference in the scenery was worth it. Illinois is so much crop farmland that there aren't a lot of "natural" areas to get away to, or so it seems. Wisconsin has more lakes, more land contours, and generally more "foresty" areas that to me make a nice change of pace. Illinois is a big state. You can find vacation homes in Galena, in the NW corner of the State, the Shawnee Forest at the southern end of the state, or many places in between. However, Chicagoans tend to buy vacation homes in Wisconsin or SW Michigan. You can find nice ones within two hours of downtown Chicago and the prices and taxes in Wisconsin and Michigan are favorable. |
