What coat is NECESSARY for Chicago Winters? |
Travel Info I'm attending school in Chicago for the first time this fall. I have no idea of what type of coat I should get. Does anyone know of the best brand of coat to get? I've heard Northface, Spyder, or simply a fur coat. If you have experienced a cold Chicago winter then please offer me some advice. Travel Tips Most college kids that live on campus, believe it or not, walk around in the dead of winter with shorts, t-shirts and flip flops. If you are living on campus nearly everything is nearby. Public transportation is right outside the door or very nearby most colleges and universities so most college students try to dress like their peers and forgo the weather. But if you are living off campus or just have a bit more sense than some of the typical college kids a long water resistant down coat, warm mittens, warm hat, waterproof warm boots, thermal underwear or winter tights and plenty of thick warm socks. Sorry, can't give you specific brands as it depends on the style you like and the way it fits you. A fur coat will not keep you warm in a Chicago winter, especially in January, down works better at keeping you warm. Welcome to Chicago. Others Something VERY warm and water resistant. North Face is OK, but do yourself a favor and don't get something that EVERYONE else has. I personally like Patagonia, Cloud Veil and Marmot. Moosejaw.com is a good site... allright, where are you going to school? ok, Northface is good, look, let me just tell you something, a true winter day in chicago, is one when your buggers freeze as they exit your nose (literally), so you just get what you feel warm. Also get ear covers or a hat that will also cover your ears (even more if you will use public transportation) while you wait your ears could freeze or get a bad case of hypotermia. I live there, I go to UIC. Don't get a fur coat. If you will be walking a lot and taking public transit (as opposed to driving or getting rides), then get a big down coat. I don't know what brand mine is, but it's decent. It has a detachable hood, too. When it's very cold out, I tend to wear tights or another pair of pants underneath my jeans (thermal underwear underneath your clothing works too), and I'll layer several tops under my sweater. For the clothing right next to your skin, it's good to wear fabrics that wick away moisture. You'll be comfier that way. You need a hat, gloves and a scarf, too. This past winter was pretty mild. I only had to do what I described above about two or three times all winter. Your best bet is probably to wait til you see what your fellow students are wearing, and what feels comfortable to you. My personal preference is for a ski jacket, but lots of prople like longer styles. Plan on something to keep you warm at about 0 degrees. Brand is probably less important than style. a coat lined with eddie bean prime, premium goose liver down. that will do ya. A down coat that goes to your knees. And don't get a high loft pile, as it will flatten in the wind. I recommend L.L. Bean or Eddie Bauer. |
