In Chicago, is it better to stay outside of downtown and drive in, or is it better to stay right downtown? |
Travel Info I want to keep safety and price in mind, also. What are the different areas like? Which areas do you think are the better/safer ones to stay in? I would also like to know some fun places to check out while I'm there. Thank you so much for your answers/comments/suggestions! Travel Tips It depends on what you want to do. I like staying in the suburbs when I go to visit, but I used to live there, in the suburbs. So most of my friends still live in the suburbs. It's cheaper to just rent a car and/or stay by the airport (O'Hare) which is in between the city and most of the suburbs and take the L in or drive into the city. As far as safest areas, in the city, I'd stay on Michigan Ave. In the Suburbs, Schaumburg because it's right by Woodfield Mall which is huge. And Schaumburg is really safe and pretty affordable. Rosemont, it's right by O'Hare so it's safe. Avoid anything by Midway, trust me. Elk Grove Village, Itasca, Hoffman Estates, Arlington Heights are all near a lot of different activites and relatively close to the city. While you're there go to Wrigleyville (The area around Wrigley Field), The Magnificent Mile, Buckingham Fountain, The Field Museum, The Art Institute, The Shedd Aquarium, and in the suburbs, Woodfield Mall. Fox and Hound in Schaumburg is lots of fun if you like sports bars. There's a ton of stuff to do! Hope that helped! Source(s): Lived in Chicago for 3 years Other Travel Tips Financially: stay outside city; take Metra or CTA (train/public transportation) to city. "right downtown" costs A FORTUNE ... if the cost is really good - then the location isn't! (and probably isn't really close to downtown) If you want a hotel room that is relatively cheap, you can stay at a hotel by O'Hare Airport and take the train downtown. A hotel room in the city (downtown) during the summer will cost at least $250 per night, unless you stay at the Tokyo Hotel or another cheaper place. Some have said that you can get a really good deal on a nice downtown hotel room on Priceline.com. I don't know if it's possible to get a good deal in the summer. You can try. There is a hostel downtown that is cheap. But it is popular and crowded in the summer. The best neighborhoods are downtown (including the Magnificent Mile, Printer's Row and Streeterville), Gold Coast, and Lincoln Park. These neighborhoods are the most expensive. Fun places: free music festivals at Grant Park, Millenium Park, Michigan Avenue shopping and dining, Sears Tower, Oak Street Beach, Signature Lounge at the Hancock Center (great view of the city, no admissions fee because it's a lounge), boat tour (departs from Navy Pier), clubbing in the Gold Coast and downtown, check out Funky Buddha Lounge on West Grand Avenue - it's a good club. Whatever you like (except camping and outdoors activities), you can find it in the city (or the suburbs). You don't want to drive in if you're staying outside downtown. Take the L (train system) instead. Parking in most parts of downtown cost $30 during the day. You don't want to be stuck in traffic in Chicago. Take a cab or a bus within downtown, unless it's a short distance and you can walk. There is also a free trolley bus that takes tourists and locals to places of interest. A daily transit pass for CTA costs $5. This includes unlimited bus and train (L only, not Metra commuter trains) rides. I"ve lived here all my life, next year my vacation will be in the heart and pulse of downtown/goldcoast .every thing is right there from the oak st beach to navy pier....You want you will find it by asking you concierge...If its all fun try to get over to wriglyville if you want to save some money stay out of downtown, there's a super 8hotel ($90 for a double queen breakfast included)on sheridan, it's a pretty safe part of town, you'll find good restaurants and it'll take you 30minutes (or less) to get downtown by train.A friend of mine stayed in this hotel, it's clean and the staff's friendly (don't forget it's a super 8 not a hilton) .There's a great hotel on lincoln Park (a Days Inn I think) it's high rated and in a great part of town . I don't think that airport motel are a good choice they're good if you're travelling and need a place for a night or two but they're really cheap!!!Driving downtown is expensive, the CTA's safe and it'll get you everywhere (check the website you'll find maps and you can buy a visitors pass). hope you'll enjoy Chicago!!!have a nice trip |
