How much blocks is a mile? |
Travel Info How much blocks is a mile? Travel Tips Usually, there are 100 street numbers to a block, and 8 blocks to a mile, or 800 street numbers every mile. There are a few exceptions to this rule. It is a mile between: Madison (0 N/S) and Roosevelt (1200 S), Roosevelt to Cermak (2200 S), Cermak and 31st (3100 S). There are major streets every mile, and minor street every half mile between. All Chicago streets have a number and direction assigned to them (i.e. Halsted is 800 West, Fullerton is 2400 North, etc). All the Numbered streets, 47th, 55th, etc, are multiplied by 100 to get the number, so 55th would be 5500 South. This makes it easy to figure out how far you are going. Say you need to go from 31st and Halsted to 95th and State Street (0 E/W). 9500 - 3100 = 6400 street numbers = 64 blocks = 8 miles south. Add 1 mile east between Halsted and State, and you've got 9 miles total. Additionally, some areas of Chicago both streets and places, i.e. 58th Street next to 58th Place. The Places are essentially half-blocks. I hope all this helps Source(s): 20 years of living In Chicago Other Travel Tips how many?? i think 12 or 24. about 9 in the rule of thumb, usually 8-10 houses on a block.
