What does a Chicago accent sound like? |
Travel Info I'm from Chicago and I've heard people say that Chicagoans have accents, is it true? Travel Tips I live in CA but I am from Chicago and I hear the same thing. They tell me it's like a mild NY/NJ accent. It makes me nuts because I dont hear it!! Others I don't know, most Chicagoans have a normal speaking tone. It sounds very un-educated. Gee! Steelchess77 must be one of dem! Some Chicagoans do. The older, ethnic ones from places like Ireland, Poland, Croatia, etc. It's a mix of an Eastern European accent and midwestern accent. Kinda flat and substituting the letter "d" for "t" as in the words like "dem, dese and dose" for "them, these and those". Remember the SNL skit "The Superfans". The whole "DAAAA Bears" was a play on the Chicago accent. Instead of "The Bears", it became "DA Bears". If you can, find some old tapes of the first Mayor Daley talking. It's probaby the best example. Actually the current Mayor Daley has it down pretty good to. Listen as he says the word "Chicago". It comes out "Chi-CAW-go". But it's starting to fade away. The older ethnic people are dying off and there are so many people moving in from other places in the Midwest and beyond, that it's getting pushed aside. But it's still there a little bit. uh...............we speak pretty normal thank you very much! I can tell you that Mystery G doesn't know what he's talking about. I think he sounds very un-educated. |
