I have lived in Cali my whole life, and I'm planning on moving to Chicago after a visit any suggestions.?

Travel Info
I live in a small town in sonoma county, I plan on driving for the move but im sure i will spend a full week there doing preparations but should i explore the first two days then go apartment hunting or what?

Travel Tips
I'm not sure what you might be looking for in Chicago....my suggestion is to integrate your apartment hunting into your exploring....

First thing, though, before you even set foot in Chicago...take the opportunity to look in the online versions of the local papers especially the Reader for apartments to rent...this way you can have some idea of what to look for. Be sure to take a look at a map of the public transportation system...it can be pricey to have a car in the Chicago area....also, use the maps and websites to check out neighborhoods and perhaps use them to plan your exploring....

If you look online for ideas on places to live before you come, then you can probably take some time once you get here to explore...good luck and enjoy Chicago! Source(s): http://www.chicagotribune.com (major newspaper)

Other Travel Tips
I WOULD BE SURE TO RESEARCH THE AREA WELL BEFORE DECIDING ON A PLACE TO RENT.
I KNOW CHICAGO CAN BE VERY ROUGH.
I AM SURE YOU CAN HANDLE IT- BEING FROM CALIFORNIA! JUST CHECK AROUND FIRST!
MUCH LUCK!
LIVED OUTSIDE OF CHICAGO
Sure, you may as well explore a little first, see what neighborhoods you like and don't like, and then look for an apartment in the neighborhood that appeals to you the most.
You should definitely come here for a few days and explore the city. If you have any particular neighborhoods in mind, check them out in person, during the day AND night. Neighborhoods that seem nice and all during the day can have a different personality at night. The Chicago Reader is a good source for finding apartments. The link is below. All neighborhoods in Chicago have crime, even the so-called "good" ones. But some have less that others. Ask around, do some online research, check it out in person.
