Are tripods allowed at the Hancock Observatory in Chicago? |
Travel Info I would like to take a long exposure night shot when visiting the Hancock observatory, but am not sure the best way to stabilize my camera without the use of a tripod. Is there a ledge or any other camera support for a mini tripod available for those that have been there? Travel Tips Yes, you can bring a tripod, its not a big deal to go up there. Others I think so. Most of the observatory is enclosed, so you shouldn't cause much trouble with a tripod. There is an "open" area outside a door that is screened in. I don't know if they will let you take a tripod out there. The Hancock website doesn't give any information about their rules. http://www.hancock-observatory.com/... There are no ledges to support a mini-tripod, so that won't work. You probably have to get a full tripod for the best results. But what you should really do is skip the observatory altogether and go to the Signature Room a floor below. It has a bar in there that is free to get into. Go to the elevator on the south side of the building, go up and buy a drink (Coke, whatever). There are seats right next to most of the windows and there is a ledge running the length of those seats to put your drinks, food, etc on. These would be perfect for setting up a mini-tripod. Call and ask. |
