A chicago question from gary indiana to rockford ill what is shorter to take I90 OR I294?

Travel Tips
Always better to avoid the city (especially with the Dan Ryan construction), so I say 294. I hope you have an I-pass though, it can save you a lot of time at the toll booths. If you want to avoid any surprises go to www.mytraffic.com right before you leave the house and type in both routes to see if there's any construction or accidents that might get in the way. They have sensors in the highways and cameras so they are pretty good at pinpointing backups.

p.s. my boyfriend is a traffic reporter and he agrees on 294

Shorter time or distance? And also what time of day?
taking 90 thru the city is less miles, but traffic will make it longer. I usually take 294
294: going through the city on 90 will drive you nuts (sorry about the bad pun...)
Because of construction delays, I-90/94 through Chicago will be a slow ride.

For a shorter trip, timewise...you will take both...and I-290. Get on I-294 to I-290 near Hillside then I-90 near Woodfield Shopping center, then west to Rockford.
