What part of Chicago or close suburb can I move to that is safe and affordable for a single black female?

Travel Info
I am moving from Texas within 1 month and finding it very hard to find a place to live. I would like to still have the conveniences of garage parking and washer and dryer in my apartment. Most suburban areas are prodominately white, which is ok, but I would like to have a little culture.

Travel Tips
I agree with Oak Park. There is a good mix of people and great shops, restaurants, etc. Safety is good, especially considering it borders the west side of the city proper (not the best of neighborhoods). I probably wouldn't suggest you live east of Ridgeland Ave. until you know the area a little better.
The South Loop/Near South side of the city is good too. It's not "touristy clean" like the north side, but it's affordable and the city is constantly making improvements. They will keep working on it too because they are trying to get the 2016 Olympics here.
To get a washer/dryer AND garage parking in any good neighborhood will be expensive (think $1200/mo.+). If you really need all those amenities you may have to move further out into the suburbs just to be able to afford them. Just remember - Chicago has a great commuter train system (www.metrarail.com). It can get you downtown in less than an hour from most suburbs. Source(s): I used to live in Oak Park.
Other Travel Tips
I would highly recommend Oak Park, IL. It's a suburb right outside of Chicago so your commute downtown would range from 15 minutes to 30 depending on traffic. It's a great area with parks, great libraries, lots of different transportation options and the security is excellent. To get a feel for the area which is west of the city, you can go to the Oak Leaves newspaper. It's a super community with lots of great people and is racially diverse.

Best of luck to you.
the Uptown neighborhood, the Rogers Park neighborhood...these are on the north side.

the South Loop neighborhood.. on the near south side.

Have you looked at craigslist.com for apartments?
Lakeview is a safe neighborhood on the north side of Chicago -- upscale, diverse yuppie neighbors. Call 'The Apartment People'. They'll locate an apartment for you, at no charge.
Edgewater would be my first suggestion. Relatively safe, affordable, very diverse. As far as the specifics (washer and dryer, etc.) you'll have to search for it yourself. I live in Edgewater myself and you can definitely find those things you want there. Although, it depends on what you mean by "affordable". An apartment with a washer and dryer in it and garage parking can go kinda high.

Also you can look at Lakeview, Buena Park, Hyde Park, Wicker Park, Logan Square. Apartments in these places are still pretty reasonable (although it might be tough to find in Wicker Park) .

And while I personally like Rogers Park, it is experiencing a little crime problem these days. I don't think it's horrible. It's still a very diverse community right now. If possible you should pay a pre-move visit to Chicago and look at it and other neighborhoods for yourself.

And I find it funny that Rogers Park is being suggested to YOU. Usually when people ask for neighborhoods to move to, no one suggests rogers park or they say to stay away from it. I wonder what the difference is and why they're suggesting it to you... hmmmm.
This is not the deep south. You would be welcomed as a neighbor in any part of Chicago and the suburbs surrounding the city. Contrary to what you may have heard, there is a fair amount of culture in the suburbs as well as in the city.

There are nice affordable apartments in walking distance to Metra (train) stations in most of the suburbs. They would provide you easy access to the downtown "Loop" area of the city. Inside Chicago, safety is not always assured, but tends to increase along with the rental rates. The North Loop, Near North and River North and Lakeview neighborhoods all have nice housing for singles, but the rents are very high.

If you have a job waiting for you in Chicago, you might do well to contact the human resources department to ask for suggestions of areas convenient to where you will be working.
