Travel Tips
You may want to stay in the near north side of Chicago which is the Lakeview/Lincoln Park neighborhoods instead of downtown Chicago. Lakeview and Lincoln Park has hotels one is the Surf then other is Days Inn on Diversey Pkwy. Staying in this part of town gives you access to buses that will take you straight downtown. The number 22 Clark bus, the Broadway bus and the Diversey bus lines all meet in this area. Nearby walking distance if you're in Chicago in the summer is the Lincoln Park Zoo and also the Belmont train which has two lines which can take you anywhere quickly. There's China town, State Street, Michigan Avenue. You can't get lost in Chicago. There are free maps at the train station. At this time the Diversey train station is closed for renovation. The closest one you can take would be Belmont which is in between Sheffield and Halsted St. I recommend walks down to the Fullerton Lincoln Avenue area. Down Clark Street in that area. (You can walk all the way to downtown if you like) I recommend seeing the John Hancock building. There's the Cheesecake Factory downstairs from it which has great food. For a great thin slice pizza in the area of the Days Inn go to Ranaldi's. Most people I take think the giant slice of sausage and cheese is the best sausage and cheese they've ever had.
There is a free trolley you can catch all around town. See map. It takes you free to the State Street area, Michigan Ave/Gold Coast area and all museums. Must sees is the Art Museum. If you like you can see the other museums. My favorite is the Oriental Institute. It's a tiny version of the British Museum with great ancient antiquity. Well worth a visit. The Clark bus can take you straight to Wrigley Field home of the Chicago Cubs baseball team. You can get a seat in the bleachers for a good price. Have a great time.

The above site may be useful.
Go to Navy Pier, walk along Michigan Ave. (shopping), Lincoln Park Zoo, Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium and walk along Lake Shore. You can also visit the Sears Tower, John Hankock and the mall inside the water tower (new). You can visit the old water tower, which is what was left after the Chicago Fire and is a museum. There are so many other places, but I can't think of them right now. You can take the L (train) or the bus just about anywhere. Hope this helps!!
Budget and likes/dislikes have a lot to do with recommendations so that makes it kind of tough. In general, if you plan to be in the city you have no need of a car and I would suggest public transport and/or cabs including to and from the airport. Fall is a great time to visit and if you are at all into art (even a little bit) I would strongly recommend the Art Institute for an afternoon. Check out the site below for more options.

Navy Pier, Michigan Avenue, Water tower place, Brook field Zoo, Lincoln Park Zoo, Museum of Science and Industry or hit up the dance clubs and restaurants...there are tons of stuff to do here in Chicago. It all depends on what you like to do.
You don't want a car, not in Chicago. Chicago's public transportation system is very good and safe. Besides, driving is difficult at best, and expensive, and there's nowhere to park anyway.

But that's OK. Most of the things you'll want to see in Chicago are within walking distance of one another - it's a very walkable city - or an easy trip on the trains or buses or a quick taxi ride (and taxis are everywhere.)

I'd recommend Michigan Avenue as a starting point. The north end of Michigan Avenue has all the great shopping, and the south end contains Millennium Park and the Art Institute, as well as the festivals around Grant Park. Just west of Michigan Avenue where the Art Insitute is located is the Loop and the Sears Tower, and the Loop gives you easy access to the neighborhoods of the north side, such as the very fun area around Wrigley Field. And just east of Michigan Avenue is the lake.

To get information on the transit system, go to transitchicago.com. I'd also recommend purchasing a tourbook - my favorite is Frommer's, though the Lonely Planet Guide to Chicago is quite good as well - and putting on a good pair of walking shoes.
