much of Yunnan is mountainous and very rural, if you stick to the tourist areas it will be easy, but as far as getting out in the country side it will be difficult, even if you speak Mandarin b/c there are lots of dialects and some people don't speak Mandarin at all

kunming is the biggest and is the capital of yunnan. going around town with a taxi is the most convenient way of moving around. taxi is very cheap in china but be sure to write down your destinations first and show it to the driver as they might have a hard time understanding your pronounciation.
yes, you can move bu yourself.i was born in KUNMING OF YUNNAN.but now live in Chengdu of Sichuan.
