Is this the correct way to greet someone who speaks Cantonese? |
Travel Info Her name is "Shelly" and while she speaks English I would like to at least greet her in Cantonese (she's from Hong Kong). "Hung wui hung wui Shelly" = "It's my pleasure to meet you Shelly" "Hung woowee hung woo woowee" Correct pronunciation? Where would I correctly insert her name if at all? Would it then make sense to ask "Lee ho ma?" = "How are you?" "Nay (or lay) ho ma) I've seen/heard both ways. Travel Tips "Hung Wui" is only used when you were first introduced, it's the equivalent of "nice to meet you" but in a more formal manner. As to the "how are you?", it is more like "neh hol ma?" although that is also not very common these days. You are likely to hear as much "hi" or "hello" as the "neh ho." amongst friends nowadays. Others i dont think it really matters as long as you say hi and stuff... It is pronounced as "Lay ho ma". I would suggest you not to use the hung wui, etc. (it is all wrong anyway). Having it wrongly pronounced or with a strong foreign accent would just make one sound quite hilarious. Try not to over-impress Shelly who just might be amused. you have to see that Cantonese contains a lot of dialect, that is why Mandarin is spoken often Cantonese dialect can mean a lot of things since there is no particular rule you can say one thing and mean another thing(if you say it (correctly) but I think you got it "Shelly, lay ho!" will be most appropriate. :) |
