Why would people want to boycott the BEIJING 2008 Olimpics?
The Chinese peopel don't have anything to do with the Chinese Communist Party. I know there have been stories of the government doing bad things but, they citizens aren't. I think this is a chance for the Chinese citizens to show what they got to the world and they would feel optimistic about the 2008 Games and what their future could bring, so why boycott? Boycott the CCP not its peopel. And let's stay smart here when anwering?

The Olympics is a large event that people all over the world attend and watch. If a nation boycotts the Olympics because it is held in a nation that it disagrees with, then it makes a strong and highly publicized statement that you do not approve of what goes on in that nation. Since the United States is also a large and powerful nation, it would make an even bigger statement.

There is really no way to disconnect citizens from the government. I mean, many countries do not deal with North Korea due to the government, but they actually feel bad for the citizens. By not dealing with the North Korean government, it still affects the citizens. Boycotting the Olympics doesn't hurt Chinese citizens or the government, although it may hurt some of the tourist revenue that the Olympics attract. It is simply a way to make a statement that will surely be noticed by China and the world.

I personally do not think that boycotting the Olympics is worth it, but for those who do, that is why.

People are tired of all the human rights violations perpetrated by the Communists all these years.

You get countries to change policies by INCLUSION, not Rejection.
China was communist in all forms, now it is allowing free enterprise, By welcoming them into the world community, it will be easier to convince them to another way of looking at things like freedom.
It seems silly when we all went to the one in Germany around WW2 but it could give the impression that we approve of what their government does even though it isn't really our business.
Would that it were so but this is ALL about the Government and has very little to do with a people who are still being forced to live in third world conditions, surrounded by pollution, coal smoke in the air so bad you can barely see on some days.

But there's lots of beautiful new buildings, just stay on the main drag, if you go three blocks off of them you will see poverty like you can hardly believe.

You cannot boycott the CCP independently of China because it has totalitarian control over the people who have no say in what does or can happen.

The Chinese government should be spending the money on feeding and supporting their huge unemployed population, give the people complete freedom on the Internet, to come and go as they please, to have more than one political party, to have as many children as they wish, and to stop poisoning pet food.

Those aren't just stories you've heard, they are real life stories about a very decent people who are still slaves to the system.
A possible explanation for that behaviour is that when foreigners look at the location (Beijing - the government capital) and look at who is spending all the money for constructing the olympic park and modernizing Beijing (the government)... it seems quite obvious that the olympics are not only a statement for Chinese people, but also a large statement by the Chinese government.

Even though it is supposed to just be about the sport and international goodwill, unfortunately politics comes into events as significant as the olympics.
