Travel Tips
It depends where in China you are.

Beijing, Shanghai, and HK are very expensive - like the rest of the east.

But if you venture into the west or SW it is extremely cheap - I got by there on $10 USD a day ... amazing places like Yangshuo, Chengdu, Kunming, Dali, Shangri-la , and of course, Tibet.

The hottest, spiciest food I ever had was Sichuan Hot Pot in Chengdu ...

And the best meal I had there (in 3 months of travel) was 'Across The Bridge Noodles' - in Kunming.

try and keep as rural as you can and China is very cheap, even so it's still great value whenever or wherever you go.It is also a life-changing experience.Have a great time
My sister went earlier this year. She found it really hot and humid, it was also really crowded she said and she got fed up of eating dumplings! Apart from that the attractions were great. Yes really cheap, and take clothes that are not too warm or heavy.
Hope you have a great time.
Apart from northern regions, it will be very hot and uncomfortably humid, so take light clothing. Expect to find many tourists at the main attractions (Chinese, as well as foreign), prices are not expensive by European standards; plenty of cheap pirate CD/DVD's etc. You will be pestered by souvenir sellers! Tour guides take you to official tourist shops, where they will hope you will part with your money, for expensive items, like jade, and hand-woven carpets.
Bring light, cool, airy clothing, like cotton shorts, tanks or tees. It's cheap in some places. The major cities are quite expensive(hong kong, Beijing etc.)
Been there.
China is LOVELY but I wouldn't go there in July. You will roast in that heat!!! Try to re-book your holiday to October when the heatwave has gone but it is still warm and sunny.
Yes, it is cheap there but not your usual designer clothes that you can buy here. They'd be even more expensive over there! For general things like simple clothes, food, taxi, public transport, nik-naks it's really great. I wouldn't waste my luggage weight limit by packing clohtes for the trip because once you get there you could judge for yourself what type of clothing you need in that awful heat and you can buy them there for pittance. If you go with an empty luggage you can bring back loads of stuff you buy there, starting from trinkets to clothes, nice fashion jewellery, great and unusual shoes. Have fun, I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself, but I'm not going until October!!! ;-)))
