Does Beijing Have an Air Pollution Problem? |
Travel Info I am aware of the upcoming Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008. How serious is the air pollution in Beijing? Is the problem being denied? Can Yan Ai or any others answer my questions? Travel Tips The pollution there is incredible, I was there once in the early spring and on a day without wind we couldn't see accross the street. Unless it is windy or has rained recently the pollution is really tough on you, especially if you are staying longer than a week. Life expectancy is a lot shorter there than in the countryside, but the colder months are worse because the people still use coal for heating. I have read the government plans on using a process called "cloud seeding" to induce rain before and during the Olympic games to clean up the air, that is a total joke to many scientists. Beijing has much more pollution than Mexico City, the second worse of the cities I have traveled to. Others It's bad, very bad, it leads to 400,000 premature deaths a year. It's not choking though. Hope that helped :) Yes. My daughter visited there for the Chinese New Year and she said the smog was very bad. Also, there is an ecological problem going on there. She tells me that the Gobi desert is rapidly expanding due to global climate change and is sending a lot of dust into Beijing. She describes it as quite a crisis over there...of course, we in North America have heard little or nothing about it.... yes Yes but apparantly all the factories in and near Beijing will be closing down soon to clear the air in time for the Olympics. The process takes a whole year and they'll be fired up just after I'm sure. I am going in 3 weeks' time so I shall be able to tell you then! yes. air pollution is a big problem. u never see the blue sky w fluffy clouds. it always likes like its gonna rain. i heard that china is think of making alot of wind to blow away the pollution. anyway i hope it gets better before the game cause i would be there! they have a huge air pollution problem |
