Which district in shanghai??

Hi, which district in Shanghai is the best to live in?? I'm planning to learn Chinese language in one of the university. Right now, I'm thinking on enrolling on Jiaotong univ, Shanghai Univ, or Fudan univ. I'm looking for district that close to one of them , housing cost not more than $800s per month..., close to shopping area and food area if possible. And safe area is the most important. Anyway, I think Shanghai divided into 2 areas? Puxi and Pudong? How much time do you need to travel from the very east of Shanghai to the very west of Shanghai?? Is it available through Metro line? or metro line only available on one of that area above??

If you want to live next to the universities you mentioned, it has to be Puxi. Pudong used to be farmland until the 1980s. There are several districts in Puxi. Zhabei, Jing'an and Hongkou are the ones with those universities.
If you live next to the unis, there are pubs, bars etc. frequented by students - quite nice then. If you want to enjoy the high life, it'll have to be near the Bund and People's square - with higher prices. If you need lots of - other - foreigners go to Gubei - a pricier choice, too.
Shopping facilities are almost everywhere and food, too. I am talking smaller shops and supermarkets like Carrefour ( French). Btw: starbucks abound in Shanghai and near those universities there are a lot of other venues.
Have a look at the classified section at that's Shanghai http://classifieds.thatssh.com/... for housing. Prices in RMB (Chinese currency) can be divided by appr. 8 to get USD.
