Travel Info Why did qin shi huang build the great wall of china? Travel Tips to protect the citizens of china. this is a time before bombs and nukes. Walls helped! Others to portect his people from the damm mongolians To protect China from southern invaders to defeat the enemy from outside of Chin dynasty. when Chin shi huang's age, there were many different ethnics on the northern area of the Chin country. They were good at riding horses, shooting arrows, and fighting. They threatened the power of chin shi huang, so he built the great wall. The first Emperor of China (Chinese: 鐨囧笣 Pinyin: Hu谩ngd矛), Q铆n Sh菒 Hu谩ng (Chinese: 绉﹀鐨?, did not in fact build the current Great Wall that most think of today. Q铆n, having unified the Seven Warring States (Traditional Chinese: 鎴樺浗涓冮泟 Simplified Chinese: 鎴板湅涓冮泟 Pinyin: Zh脿ngu贸 Q墨xi贸ng) ordered the destruction of the wall sections that divided his empire along the former state borders. In order to protect the people of the empire from the intrusions of the Xiongnu people from the north, he ordered the construction of a new wall to connect the remaining fortifications along the empire's new frontier. This wall was much farther north than the current Great Wall, and very few sections remain today, as much of it, consisting of rammed earth in the plains, has eroded away. Later, the Han, Sui, Northern, and Jin dynasties all rebuilt and repaired this wall. The wall's concept was revived during the Ming Dynasty following the Ming army's defeat by the Mongols in the Battle of Tumu in 1449. The Ming constructed walls on the northern border of China along the path of the current Great Wall, following the southern edge of the Ordos Desert, instead of incorporating the bend of the Hu谩ng H茅 (Yellow River). Unlike Q铆n fortifications, the Ming construction was stronger and more elaborate due to the use of brick and stone rather than rammed earth. Towards the end of the Ming Dynasty, the Great Wall helped defend against the Manchu invasions that began in the 17th century. The Ming army held off the Manchus at the heavily fortified Sh膩nh菐i Gu膩n (Shanhai Pass) and prevented them from entering the Chinese heartland. However, in 1644, W煤 S膩ngu矛 (Chinese: 鍚充笁妗?, a corrupt Ming border general, was bribed into opening the gates of Sh膩nh菐i Gu膩n, allowing the Manchus to cross the Great Wall. They quickly seized B臎ij墨ng, defeating the last of the Ming resistance and establishing the Qing Dynasty. Under Qing rule, China's borders extended beyond the walls, and Mongolia was annexed into the empire; as such, construction and repairs on the Great Wall were discontinued.
