Tibet Tour Group? |
Travel Info I am travelling to China next month and would like to check out Tibet. However, I am travelling alone and would like to find a tour group. Any ideas how or where to hook up with other travellers heading to Tibet in the second week in August? I can meet them in either Shanghai, Beijing, or Chengdu. Chengdu is the preferred location. Thanks Travel Tips First place to start looking for a group is Lonely Planet guide book. They list different agencies and hotels in various regional capital cities. When I was there the main city for people leaving for Tibet was Chengdu and Kunming was another. I understand it is possible to take the train into Lhasa from a town north of Tibet but the name escapes me at the moment. The train does not go through very scenic landscape and will be fairly long and boring. I highly recommend "sneaking in" like I did and avoid paying the FEE that the Chinese impose on travelers to this occupied country. Its not difficult to do, if you have the time to research transportation. I got a ride on the back of a truck in the town of Ghanzi(NW Sechuan Prov.) My travel companions were 12 monks, 4 nuns and misc. lay Tibetans. Simply one of the best times of my life. |
