Travel Info also what about written english is it widely writen and available Travel Tips China goes through a lot of tourism and trade from western nations, so many big cities (and especially uber-commercialized and urban cities like Beijing) will have a fair amount of English woven into the everyday ongoings. Most signs that for public convenience will have text in both Chinese and English, and sometimes even more languages. Most public workers in Beijing will have a large English vocabulary; I think that all the cab drivers are required to have some knowledge of English. If you are not of Oriental descent, most people will converse with you in English as their first choice. Others I have lots of American friends living in Beijing, and they don't have any trouble at all. Call the consulate's office or embassy to see if they can even point you in the right direction. I also recommend puchasing a Michelin Guide Book to Beijing. ...you can survive but try and pick up a bit of standard chinese....written english - when found - is usually good - GOOD FOR A LAUGH THAT IS!!!!!...big hotels and other fancy smanshy places will be fine - but cabbies and the general folk may know zip! ...look up ( i think ) www.chinglish.com ..living in beijing 2 yrs its horrible there. the signs aren't even english.. they are like bo po mo fo.. its retarded. most of the police officers don'te ven know how to speak english... There is enough to get around as long as you stay in Beijing. Most of the better educated young people speak it. The funny part is the people on the street trying to sell you junk watches and all sorts of crap seem to speak it the best. Resturaunts can be a tough. Some have bi-lingual menus. Been there many times and speak 3 words of Chinese. |
