Is there any health concerns I should worry about before entering China mainly Hangzhou? |
Travel Info I will be living in Hangzhou for 2 months it is near shanghai Travel Tips I have only visited Hangzhou once on a tour in 2003. It is a wonderful city, rich in culture and considered one of the top tourist destinations. As far as the air, it is remarkably better all over China since 2004 when they installed Euro 1 car pollution laws and this year they will adopt the most strict, Euro 3. As far as health concerns, as a general rule, restaurants that are clean and modern are safe. Use the locals as much as you can, they know the best places. You will have no trouble finding those people, they will seek you out. Always use bottled water. As in all 3rd world countries, the drinking water is not safe. You do not need shots or a health certificate to enter China. I would, however, make sure your vaccinations are up to date. That is not out of fear, its just good common sense because you will be exposed to microbes that the Chinese people are immune too, but maybe not for you. I hope this helps signed, an ex pat from the USA living in the heart of China Peace Jim . Others don't know where you live now, but be prepared for very high levels of air pollution, worse than anywhere else in the world. also, do not drink the tap water Do not drink tap water. In Hangzhou Row boat operators on the lake have a scam: After coming back to shore they will charge you 'Insurance' saying that was not included in the price. Just refuse to pay it and call the nearest Policeman Been there done that and. . . .it happened to me Hangzhou's air pollution is not bad compared to Shanghai...which is only 2 hours away by train. This city is more of a tourist area, not a major financial hub like Shanghai so you shouldn't have any problems breathing there. Shanghai's air pollution is pretty bad. If you have any respiratory problems, be prepared to have what I call burning throat syndrome. Your throat will become raw from breathing in all the pollution in the air. I'm from NYC and lived in Shanghai the past 4 months...and I thought the air was bad in NYC! While it was cool in Shanghai, the air wasn't THAT bad...but it's still dirty. Now that the weather is hot, the bad air is at it's worst. The amount of construction in the city and the sheer volume of cars/trucks/buses just exacerbates the problem. Stick with bottled water or can soda because you WILL get sick from the water in China...even in a big city like Shanghai. Bring some Pepto-Bismol or some other brand of anti-diarrhea medicine because even though you avoid the water, you can't avoid it when they cook food with it. So there's still a likelihood that you will get diarrhea. Good luck and enjoy China! |
