The mascot is the Spartan Source(s): I lived there for over 22 years Other Travel Tips South of Youngstown West of the 164 Boardman is located in northeastern Ohio in central Mahoning County about 2 miles south of Youngstown In the late 1700's a group of surveyors left New Melford, Connecticut, seeking uncharted territory. A young man in the surveying party mapped the hundreds of acres which were named Boardman Township. After exploring the territory in this great wilderness, these men returned to Connecticut. In 1799 three families arrived in Boardman. They wintered in what was then a dense forest, inhabited only by wolves, bears and Indians, who were encamped along Mill Creek. Bears caught and devoured pigs and sheep; while the wolves, making the night dismal with their howls, carried off chickens, turkeys and lambs.
