What is worth visiting on the first trip to West-Ireland and Cork?

Travel Info
We're going to Ireland for the first time in July, for our honeymoon!!!

We've rented a cottage just half an hour outside Skibbereen. What places nearby should we go visit?

We also have a day in City Cork on our way back. Any suggestions to what we should do? Any good hotels?

Yeah - and IRELAND ROCKS!

Travel Tips
There are a few pretty places around Skibbereen. Take a trip out to Mizen Head (the most southerly point on the Irish Mainland): on the way there are Schull, Barley Cove and Crookhaven, there is a very pleasant beach in Barley Cove, and Mizen head itself is quite spectacular as I recall.

Another trip you could make would be to Castletownbere, Beare Island and Dursey Island, passing by Glengariff on the way. Dursey Head has Ireland's only cable car, you will remember it, I guarantee you! Glengarrif is also very pleasent. You could take a trip to Garnish Island as there are some very pretty gardens there.

A short trip from "Skibb" will get you to Baltimore, a tiny fishing village that caters well for tourists. It has a really interesting history, and some fine pubs and restaurants. On the way to Baltimore is a small, but fascinating sea lake called Loch Hyne. It contains flora and fauna that is completely unique to Ireland: and a pretty place in its own right to visit. From Baltimore you can visit Sherkin Island and Cape Clear - two of the most southerly islands in the country.

Other great places include Courtmacsherry, Union Hall, Glandore, Bantry and Castletownsend. All are close by.

If you go north from Glengarrif you will end up in Kenmare. Again - a wonderful little town. You can then take the Ring of Kerry or go by the mountain route to Killarney - one of the bigger towns in the area.

Ok - Cork City. Definitely visit the English Market in the centre of town. The food there is some of the best in the country. The University is also a pleasent visit. The Crawford Art Gallery is also in the centre of town - its free to go in. Blarney and Cobh are close by and worth a visit. Good pubs include the Bodega, Dennehys, Counihans, the Long Valley, and the Hibernian (mind you don't get kicked out though!). It has some terrific restaurants including Jacques, the Farmgate, Jacobs on the Mall, Isaacs, Greens or (a bit cheaper)- the Strasbourg Goose, Rossinis, Il Padrino, Milanos or Luigi Malones.

Cork has a lot of hotels. If it's terrifically expensive you want then the Hayfield Manor would be the place to go. It's really, really nice. The finest hotel in the town centre at the moment would be the Clarion. The Metropole and the Imperial are fine too.

Hope you enjoy your stay here! Source(s): I live in Cork.

Congratulations. We were in Ireland on a second honeymoon last summer.

I personally liked the Jury's Inn. They have several hotels around Ireland.

Bunraty Castle, Aran islands, Cliffs of Moher

At the south end of the R595, 7mi/11km southwest of Skibbereen, we come to the resort of Baltimore, offshore from which, like a breakwater protecting the town's sheltered harbor, lies Sherkin Island, with the ruins of a castle and a monastery; there is a ferry service from Baltimore.

At the south end of the R595, 7mi/11km southwest of Skibbereen, we come to the pleasant holiday resort of Baltimore, a well-known fishing center which also has a sailing school.

Southeast of Cork, surrounded by arms of the sea, lies Great Island, on the south coast of which is the port of Cobh (International Folk-Dance Festival). This relatively modern town, 15mi/24km from Cork, was formerly an important port of call for oceangoing vessels. It is the headquarters of the Cork Yacht Club. There are facilities for all kinds of water sports. Above the harbor stands a richly decorated neo-Gothic cathedral.

Description
With the advent of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars (1792-1815) Cork Harbor became an important fueling and assembly point for naval and commercial ships.

By the time of Queen Vistoria's visit in 1849, when Cobh was renamed Queenstown, it was the point from which prisoners were transported to Australia and Irish immigrants to North America. From 1848 to 1950 more than six million Irish emigrated and about two and a half million left from Cobh.
