How was the Blarney Castle built?

Travel Tips
With a lot of *man*power! Most of the building would have been done by hand, with hoists and other wooden mechanisms also employed. Being a medieval castle, the location of the site was important, hence Blarney's location (although it is not on the highest ground available). The castle was positioned near the centre of the village; the site was probably fairly level from the outset. Hard core (rubble, rocks) would have served as the foundation and then the local stone was cut on site. Lots of timber framing would have been used as medieval scaffolding, as well as for hoisting these huge pieces of stone into position.
