Which volcano should I visit in Costa Rica? |
Travel Info I heard there are several, but not sure which one to go to. Travel Tips It depends on how much time you have, and whether you want to go to the popular places or find something more off the beaten track. The Arenal area is very developed for tourism, with plenty of hotels and tour guides around. Poas Volcano has an excellent visitors center with coffee shop and museum type educational displays. Irazu Volcano is within an hour's drive of San Jose and is a scenic drive which is paved all the way. You can visit it and look into the crater, then be back to San Jose by lunch time. I recommend Turrialba Volcano if you want a more remote experience. Takes a couple of hours to hike to the crater, nice trail and beautiful scenery. Be careful though, two tourists were killed recently while hiking up. I'd suggest seeing it from a safe distance. It gets foggy very frequent there, so planning is tricky. Try to stay two days in Fortuna so if day one is foggy you can try your luck again on day two. My family and I have a house in Costa Rica. I was just there for a month, and my sister lives down there. I saw the Arenal Volcano, and it was very exciting, and a little eerie to be close to something that is active, but definitely worth seeing. Don't stay at the Tabacon resort if unless you have a lot of money. There are plenty of other places located in Fortuna that are cheaper. myself |
