For some info. Milages will be hard to calculate. Are you only going to drive on the main roads or meander a little. I think I drove around 6000 miles one way. Maps will show closer to 3500 miles. Add in money for tolls through mex. I would drive only during the day in most parts, cows in the road etc. For a nice trip I wouldn{t do it faster than 3 weeks each way. the fastest Ive heard of is 5 days.to drive down Ive taken 2 months and 1 month so as to enjoy the trip double that for round trip. Is fun, and just be smart. a couple of tips. Seguro/insurance in mexico is expensive by the day ~$20/day but i just paid the $140 for the year. belize you need it and you buy it at the border ~$2/day. I didnt get it in guat, honduras or Nicuraga as my car wasn't so valuable. In costa rica at the border they will have you buy it at the customs office its $30/month.
I only tried to drive during the day. there are some crazy drivers, Big big slow trucks, fast cars etc. not knowing the road there could be cows or worse people that you could hit at night. If you cant find a hotel you can always do what many other do and just sleep at the gas stations, they have guards and are safe. Ive crossed the Main panamarican borders and the smaller ones. the smaller ones by far are much easier. paid no bribes. your car is allowed to pass its the law so dont let the Aduana/customs tell you differently. It took about 45 min a side to cross the borders. Make sure you have your original title, With the car in your name, If its not just in your name it will be a pain. I would get about 15 photo copies of the title, drivers license and passport photo page.
The process for crossing from say Mexico to Belize (all are similiar) is you pull up to the border. there will be police or guards around. I park by them. the ask "donde esta la oficina para aduana?" go stamp your passport out of the country, then go to the office turn in your TEMPORARY IMPORT papers. Get your deposit back from the car (in mex they take a deposit on your credit card mine was $30,, but up to $500 if its an expensive car, make sure they check your car out of the country, then head on tto some kind of insepection where they poke their head in the car. then your clear to go on.

the next side is the same. Pull up ask, check your passport into the country, then go check your car in. get the Temporary import papers for your car, these are used to show checkpoints, police, then they check your inside your car if they can be bothered and your off. sometimes they like to spray your car for agricultural pest and you have to pay a few dollars. I would not suggest having anyone help you at the borders. people will come up and offer but you dont need their help. each office will tell you where to go next. its pretty simple and This last time at the small borders I found the agents and police to be very official, no bribes no waiting,
Gas will be easy to find, and will cost around 150% of usa prices.
