I am staying with a host family for a month in Costa Rica. What type of (small) gift would be good to bring?

Travel Info
I don't want anything extravagant, but I would like to show my appreciation and hopefully give them something very US that they would appreciate.

Travel Tips
American Candies, such as something in a tin or a bag. Chocolates may not travel well. You might also think of bringing fancy American cookies, such as Peperidge farm, distinctive collection, then there are various types in one box for the family to try and enjoy. I think that is usually well recieved. If you are looking for something more expense, go for something that represents American history or heritage, such as a mini statue of liberty, but a nice one nothing too tacky. A peice of fine china, like a Lenox brand candy dish, may be a good gift, which is not too expensive, but something they may appreciate and they will remember you by, even after you leave. That is what I would bring. You may even find something in your local department store, in the home section that would hopefully be appreciated. Tough call, but it sounds like you are on the right track. If you can afford much go for the box of cookies, everyone loves that.

Others
Can't go wrong with food.
Is there any young ladies? then why don`t you bring some condoms? they may be useful.........in the night probably!

Hey THIS IS THE BEST ANSWER, COME ON !

When I was in a similar situation I took See's Candies. My hostesses were very appreciative. Before choosing candy I looked for many other things, but nearly nothing was made in the US.

If that is not suitable, you might try souvenirs from your home town, mugs, T-shirts (especially for the kids.)
Where you can go out and purchase things of substance from a store, when I go visit and stay with my "Tica's" family, I give them something small that I own which is dear to my heart. I think this means alot more than a store-bought item, knowing that you are giving something precious from you to them.
