I'm going to Costa Rica for 10 days, can I trust the food from the market? |
Travel Info I understand Rico's use some odd pesticides, will cooking vegies and pealing fruits work? Travel Tips Costa Rica has a strong health and safety program, especially in the prevention of Cholera, but street vendors/food stands are not well monitored. I've traveled in Costa Rica three times (for as long as a month) and have never been sick. Buy bottled water and carry it with you (it's inexpensive and easy to find). Don't drink food stand drinks that are made with water unless you see the "seal" broken in front of you (this goes for most Latin American countries). I rule of thumb for street food is - if it's well cooked, you're probably alright. If you can peel the fruit or vegetable, then you it's usually safe to eat the fruit inside (only the fruit). Stay away from raw fruits and vegetables that you cannot peel. Washing raw fruits and vegetables (know the water source) is a good idea. Cooking works too. I was there about one year ago and we bought fresh vegetables in a huge outdoor market and a smaller one in two different communities and had some great salads. My children (ages 3 and 5) and no one got sick. We followed the advice above. Most restaurants are fine. The lunch "casada" is a nice blue plate special that features soup, rice, a fried egg, a piece of meat (chicken or beef) and some salad. It may also come with a drink. It's a nice filling lunch. Small restuarants and bigger ones serve this. The beans and rice are a staple too. In San Jose and at the beaches, there are food stores that are fine. Bottle soft drinks, beer, etc..are easy to purchase (I'm assuming you're old enough for beer/wine). Source(s): My personal experience. Last trip November 2004 for Thanksgiving. Other Travel Tips You should ensure that everything you eat is either thoroughly cooked or is peeled by you. If you eat in a restaurant your food should be steaming when it is served, and if you cook food from the market it should be steaming at some point before you eat it (i.e. it has to reach 100藲C). If you cook your veggies and peel your fruits you should be fine. Short-term exposure to pesticides is generally less of a worry than bacteria and other parasites. yes... u can trust the food from the market... if u not sure u can log on to: http://www.infocostarica.com/culture/foo... It should be OK (otherwise all the people who live there would be sick) just make sure that you wash all veggies in bottled water prior to cooking. OFCOURSE U CAN |
