EF tours Costa Rican Expedition?

Travel Info
Has anybody been on an EF tour? What kind of meals do they serve and what quality are the hotels? How was your trip and and tips about what to pack?

Travel Tips
I have never been with EF tours, but I can tell you are the typical gringo who wants to visit the country with a "planned" expedition. I highly discourage you to go down this road, you would be much better off on your own booking a nice hotel and exploring Costa Rica at your own pace. This way you can also save money by choosing the restaurants you want (which are cheaper and way better than any packed meal), perphaps meeting some locals (which hate touristic groups filled with ignorants who treat their home and country as an attraction and then leave it full of garbage and useless things like bended knives and chewed gum), and see things others never see.

Just pack the essentials, nothing you would not use at home. I highly recommend a good insect repellant because bugs in Costa Rica are nasty. Also, don't wear anything you would not wear at home. Don't be fooled by TV, THERE IS NOT SUCH A THING AS RAINFOREST CLOTHES. If you dress a touristic t-shirt that says something like "Costa Rica-Pura Vida" or "Jaco Beach, Costa Rica" (you know the kind I'm talking about, the ones with frogs and alligators and stuff like that) you are just telling muggers and kidnappers "Hey, I'm a gringo with mucha plata en dolares. Come and get me as soon as you can!"
Don't get me wrong, Costa Rica is not a dangerous place at all, but don't tempt your luck. Just follow this advice and when in doubt, ask yourself "What would a Costarican do?" Source(s): I'm a Costarican and I have met several stupid gringos over the years.

Other Travel Tips
dont take those tours, its better to rent a car and go on your own. also learn some spanish. just pack about anything. in these days of april you dont know what to expect. its supposed to be sunny all the time but it really isnt. in july it will rain and be really except for a week i forgot how its called that it wont rain. bring insect repelent. also visit the caribbean, its beautiful like cahuita or el refugio de vida silvestre gandoca-manzanillo. and arenal and many guanacaste beaches. blah blah blah
ive lived here for like.. 9 years!
You will save mucho dinero by not taking the tour. I can understand why you feel better doing that, but Costa Rica is an easy place to get around. Bus service is outstanding and will take you almost anywhere you might want to go. The main tourist places have excellent accommodations in every price range from $10 a night to $150 a night.

Best places to visit.

Arenal Volcano. direct buses from San Jose. Stay at the Arenal Observatory Lodge.
Monteverde. direct buses from San Jose. You can ride a horse between Monteverde and Arenal or do a combination taxi-boat-taxi for about $25. The horse ride is a tad more expensive. You can also take a bus, changing in Tileran.

You like beaches. There is Cahuita also with great snorkeling about 4 hours from San Jose by bus.

Interested in birds?? Check out La Selva near Puero Viejo de Sarapiqui. There is a great hotel there El Gavil谩n with nature trails. And you can take a boat trip up the Rio Sarapiqui. La Selva has 4 hour and 8 hour nature tours, mostly birds.

What to take. Pack light. A good pair of waterproof hiking boots and an extra pair of light shoes. 3 shirts--long sleeve, 3 pair pants--long, 3 pair hiking socks--coolpix--2 pair regular. 5 pair drawers. Light weight rain gear. Swim suit. Toilet paper. Insect repellent. The reason for the long sleeve shirt and long pants is because of the mosquitoes.
