Travel Tips
I'm surprised noone who actually lives in Costa Rica has replied to your question; I've been there before many years ago but I always get my butt kicked when I answer because I'm competing against the locals. We stayed on the Pacific side in the Gulf of Papagayo at the Blue Bay Inn but I'm sure the resort has changed names since I was there @6-7 years ago. The resort was quite nice, was up on the cliffs over-looking the bay and usually had a good dinner show each evening. Some of the side-trips we did was to see the crocodiles on the Corabichi River, visit the Arenal Volcano/Lake Arenal, and, my favorite trip was to the Tobacon Hot Springs. I do not recommend renting a car because, when we were there, any road off the beaten path was treachorous; our very professional bus driver faced many wash outs on the winding, very "bumpy" mountain roads going to the hot springs and back. The people are friendly and the country has the world's best coffee and pineapple. You can probably just click on to Travel and then Costa Rica and review all the answers from similar questions to yours. If you are looking to rent a condo on the bay, people we met on our trip actually bought a time-share and my brother has remained friends with them. You can also message me if you think I can be of any more help.

Others
There are a zillion things to do and just as many places to stay. Depends on your budget and level of comfort needs. Do you like to rough it? Do you require room service hotels or are you happy in hostels?

Do you like to be adventureous or do you like to take it easy and relax?

Not knowing any of this I would suggest you get a recent book on traveling to Costa Rica as well as check the internet.

I would suggest you check out the Pacific coast. From North to South there are tons of places to stay and things to see. But visit from Dec - March...when it's dry and sunny! Avoid the Pacifc coast April - Nov unless you like rain!

Checking out local villages for their annual "rodeos" and fiestas is a MUST, as well as local soccer games.

HAVE FUN!!
