Cell phone in Costa Rica? |
Travel Info Right now I live in the U.S. but when I move to Costa Rica next month Sprint Nextel told me that I wouldn't be able to use my cell phone down there, so does anyone have any options as to how I might be able to have a mobile phone down there? Travel Tips MAN, its not that hard to get a cell in Costa Rica. All you need is $130 for the cell phone with the phone line. You just go to the mall or any shopping center and you will see allot of Cell Phone Sales agencies and you can just buy a phone there and most of them connect the line for you and if they don't connect the line for you in the store you buy it at, then you just go to the ICE office, they have allot of offices in different counties but the best and fastest one to go to is the one in San Pedro its 10 minutes away from center San Jose you just take a cab there and its really cheap. And right now there are allot of phone lines available. So all together counting the phone and line purchase all you need is $130. Because you just buy a phone for 50,000 colones which equals $100 and you just need less than 15,000 colones to connect the line which equals $30. You can have everything done in 1 day. There are several companies that rent cell phones but it is expensive (and maybe illegal). I have done it several times. The ones that send you a phone while you are still in the states tend to be cheaper than the ones you have delivered to you in Costa Rica. Be prepared for a nightmare! I will take you several months to get a cellular line. There is only one provider: ICE, which is a government agency. You cannot use a cell phone line from the U.S. You need to get a Costa Rican one and buy the phone in Costa Rica because they have certain restrictions. The phones are imported but they have to meet certain standards and rules. They will configure your cell phone at ICE too. Good luck!
