Where to go in Central America?

Travel Info
Would like go surfing - maybe this summer. Where are the best spots, the best people?

Travel Tips
definately, costa rica. if you are going to the north pacific coast, i would recommend potrero grande (a.k.a. ollie's point) and playa naranjo (witches rock). the easiest way to reach both is by a boat out of playas del coco. there may even be one out of playa grande, but i'm not completely sure on that. be careful of the crocodiles that sometimes come out of the river's mouth at witches rock. there is also the surf mecca of playa tamarindo, a definate must-see but it can get crowded. playa grande is also nice, although the main peak can get a little busy. olds man (near tamarindo) has the classic longboard waves with a nice shoulder giving good noseriding both left and right. some like playa avellanas. playa negra often has walls by noon and is known for the waves it gave on endless summers II. nosara beach also gets some great breaks even though its a little bit of a pain to get there.

if you are going to the caribbean side, i'd check out playa manzanillo near puerto viejo, limon. puerto viejo also gets some major waves. "tubular" as my friend calls them. playa bonita near limon is a point/reef that is well known for its thick, powerful, and sometimes dangerous left.

for the central pacific side, i would suggest boca barranca, which has some great waves and is located 100 km from san jose. puerto caldera has an awesome left and is about 3 or so km from barranca. playa jaco is very popular and has a great break until the surf gets too big. the waves are not always dependable, though. playa hermosa, puntarenas (puntarenas *not* guanacaste) has a great surf break.

for the south pacific coast, i would suggest quepos and playa dominical. drake's bay is probably one of the best in the area. pavones has an excellent left point which is considered one of the longest in the world. definately, a go-to if you are in the area.

as for the people, the people in costa rica are generally friendly. you can't go wrong. it all depends on what you want to surf. personally, i prefer playa naranjo and potrero grande but costa rica can provide whatever you are looking for. i hope you have a great vacation and that i could help.
