What is the procedure to import a used vehicle from the USA into Costa Rica?

Travel Tips
Hi there is a very simple procedure.
Just call Nova Cargo/ Latii Express Co. in Miami and they will ship your car from you without any trouble.
All you need is a clean original title, and copies of your friver licence and passport.
This company has offices in San Jose and the port of Limon and will take care of everything.
Normally the charge from Miami is $800- 850 dollars. To limon.
The taxes are high and are downward according to the year the car was built and type of car
Automobiles pay one rate, pick up a different rate, etc.
And the discount is per percentages of the value up to five years old. Where the maximun discount is.

In the case of used cars, the gas emission certificate must be issued within 30 days prior to shipping the car to Costa Rica.

Tourists may import cars and use them for 6 months without paying import tax. You need the same papers and car has to be registered on the person importing it.
There is no long process in this case.

If you want to bring a car from US, it is a good idea to ship it. Some adventurous immigrants even bring their car driving through whole Central America. However we suggest, not to do this. Especially, if your car looks almost new. If you decide to import a car, you have to know that tax system is complicated and based on the year built as well as on other facts. You also should know that you can get frustrated very easy as a car owner in Costa Rica, since it is hard to find a good mechanic and replacement parts can be expensive. Decide for a Toyota, Nissan, Honda or Suzuki. All cars being brought to the country, must be registered after 2 days in the tax office of San Jos茅. A car is really no must if you retire in Costa Rica. You might only need it for business reasons.

Car Insurance

In Costa Rica, all kind of insurance is sold by the National Insurance Institut INS (monopoly). The insurance covers damages even for foreign drivers with valid license, if the driver is at least 18 and came into the country less than 90 days ago. For cars with foreign license plate, INS offers only personal liability and protection for damage to third parties, but only during the time, the car is allowed to be used in Costa Rica.

Foreign insurance is not valid in Costa Rica. Some companies offer insurance covering Costa Rica, but most of them do not have an office here

*****Call the nearest Consulate to check out what documents are required. Make sure that the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) and all the details of the car are correctly typed on all documents****

HOPE IT HELPS!!!
