Recommend good places to stay/go in costa rica for backpackers, especially places closer to nature/the ocean?

Travel Info
I'd like to go backpacking in Costa Rica in the Spring, but I'm not sure where it's ideal for young backpackers like myself. I've heard San Jose was nice, but it seems a bit more metropolis than I'd prefer. Also, since I'm a college girl traveling solo, safety is definitely a factor. I'd really appreciate it if anyone gave me some tips/advice on this. Thanks!

Travel Tips
Costa Rica is beautiful and really safe as long as you use the same common sense you would here in the U.S. Costa Rica is a very peaceful and friendly country with much less violent crime than here in the U.S. The most crimes committed are those of theft....which is easy to avoid as long as you aren't flashing money or nice jewelry, always keep an eye on your bag. Most of these problems occur in San Jose due to its high population. I have been there once and am returning again this spring. San Jose is nice but it is extremely busy and there are much better things to see.

Costa Rica is a very unique country and is divided into 6 different climatic zones.

The Central Highlands(surrounding San Jose)

The Central Pacific

Guanacaste and Northern Nicoya(Northwestern region, dry forests)

The Northern Zone(cloud forests, volcano)

The Carribean Coast(Much more afro-Caribbean culture)

The Southern Zone ( Dense rain forest)

Here are a few of my favorite places

Corcovado National Park (The Southern Zone)----beautiful rain forest hiking

Quepos/Manuel Antonio(Central Pacific)---gorgeous beaches, friendly people, small fishing town

Monteverde and Volcano Arenal(Guanacaste And Northern Nicoya)----Cloud forest and active volcano.....different climate than the rest of the country.....spectacular scenery

If you are backpacking alone I would recommend using the countries bus system to travel from one place to the next. This will give you a chance to meet locals and other backpackers along your journey. http://www.costaricabybus.com/

I am in love with this gorgeous country so feel free to contact me with any questions. Here are a few more useful links....
