Travelers to Costa Rica Beware of La Fortuna... ??? |
Travel Info I recently returned to the US after an extended vacation to Costa Rica. It was my first time in that particular country... I loved it. downtown San Jos茅 (Plaza de la Cultura, Gran Hotel Costa Rica, Avenida Central, Mercado Centro, etc.) was great - we had some great times there and felt very safe. However, I had some problems in La Fortuna and I am curious if anyone else has had similar experiences. Everywhere I went around La Fortuna scammers were trying to sell me fake attraction tickets. I encountered a few shopkeepers that tried (when I paid in colones) to give me back dollars at the worst possible exchange rate... refusing to give me back colones until I started complaining. Once, when coming out of the club, I was approached by a group of teenage boys telling me that the taxis did not run all hours and that I would have to pay them for a ride. The La Fortuna area is beautiful, but I was all over Costa Rica and did not encounter one problem. Is there something about this area? Travel Tips hi. actually theres a group of families in costa rica that move from tourist destination to tourist destination doing stuff like this and theres always been a big problem with that in la fortuna. actually if you take bus from like san jose to la fortuna they will start on you before you even get there saying that your hotel is really bad and that they know someone with a nice room or nice hotel really cheap. the story is always the same. you pay them and they will take the money and be back with ur ticketss or confirmation. you never see them again. that might explain what is up with the tickets. the money exchange scam is an old one all across latin america. most of these countries accept dollars and also their own money. it is easy to screw a tourist that don't know the exchange rate by giving them back dollars. you did the right thing by demanding colons back tho - you should always do that. have not heard the taxi scam before but have seen local kids give rides to tourists for extra cash in other countries. either this is something new or more than likely....... they were some kids that just needed some extra beer money. Source(s): from el salvador & lived in panama a long time Other Travel Tips I am very sorry to hear you had problems staying in that beautiful country, I had never had any problem in La Fortuna my self but then again, I have not been back there for almost 14 years, again I am extremely sorry you had such unfortunate incounters. |
