Can anyone recommend a good Costa Rica guide book? |
Travel Info I'm going on a guided tour so don't need details of hotels, restaurants and transport - just a good guide to towns, national parks, wildlife, culture, etc. that I can read before I go. Travel Tips we used traveling on a shoe string, it really help out a lot and it was fun mapping and figuring our next move Others I like the Lonely Planet Guides. They do cover hotels and such, but they have a lot of other information. I use them when we travel, and most of our itineraries are already put together before we leave. They have a nice section in the front with a very basic history of the country. They list good market places, stuff to do at night and give you a feel for the areas you are visiting. I like the lonely planet guides (lyin planet) but for Costa Rica find that it is not that good. Of the many books I prefir "The Costa Rica Handbook" lonely planet isnyt good for CR! the best is Moon- for natural sites, beaches etc, Frommers for restaurants and Lets Go for budget travel. http://costa-rica.typepad.com/costa_rica... The Moon series is excellent but the most recent edition is 2004. Lonely Planet and Footprint series are good to. Fodors and Frommers are not designed for the budget traveller but if you can spend more the $90 per night on lodging they are good. Fodors has a new edition. However the BEST is the New Key to Costa Rica. It is not a series like the others, it is only published for Costa Rica. I lead groups to Costa Rica, so I own every guide book published in English since 1999. |
