Travel Info Planning on taking a trip to Costa Rica in Jan. Any tips? Travel Tips Okay, so it really depends upon how long you are visiting. I would not recommend staying in San Jose for the day trips because it is just a big city and it is better to stay in the outer towns. Guanacaste and the Nicoya Penninsula are wonderful but I agree about avoiding Samara and Tamarindo. Try Nosara and Montezuma. Also, Arenal and Corcovado are must sees! Others Make sure you go to the beach resort area near Liberia and use Liberia airport. Do not fly into San Jose, as this is the capital and in the middle of the country and there are no beaches around Go to San Jose. You can get to the volcanoes and beaches from there. I'd skip Liberia altogether. It had an earthquake and never really recovered. Malaria used to be active there, check that before you go. Beaches are not that great unless you surf. Spend more time inland and in the city. Okay, that Phone E guy is an idiot. I was just in Costa Rica in November and flew in to Liberia and it was fine. If you want hussle and bussle then yes stay in San Jose, but the beauty of Costa Rica is on the West Coast primarily in Guanacaste. A must see, not on the beach is Arenal, the active volcano near LaFortuna. I recommend ATVing while there in the jungle. Playa Conchal or Playa Brasilito is a great beach for kayaking and it's the bluest blue you've ever seen, eat @ geckos! For surfing try Playa Avellanas and eat at the greatest unknown restaurant Lola's where you can rent a surf board for 5 bucks and eat the best pizza in the world. If you stay at Los Altos, you can put your beach bags behind the bar. And if you're not staying at Los Altos, you're missing out BIG TIME, but do try their spa, it's amazing. You really get a deal if you do the half day spa for $200 instead of individual treatments. Don't waste your time in Samara, it's tacky and very dirty! I hate typical tourist destinations and love experiencing local culture, but this place was ridiculous. It caters to tourists, but the streets are dirty, sewage runs into the road and oceans. Tamarindo is being overrun. It's sad how they're destroying the local eco-system for shoddy condos. You will be asked to buy drugs here, but for nightlife its the only place really to go in Guanacaste. There are some decent restaurants too. there was no earthquake in Liberia and there is no malaria in the area! fly into Liberia and youre only 35 mins drive to the beaches like Playa Hermosa. Visit the volcano at Arenal, don't bother visiting Monteverde, over rated and takes hours toi drive the last 30km as the road is so bad! http://costa.rica.typepad.com/costa_rica... I have traveled to Costa Rica before, and I recommend staying in San Jose. Not that I have anything against Liberia, but San Jose is more centrally located and typically a fairly equal distance from several popular eco-tourist sites, not just beaches. (Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, Tortugero, etc.) It's also a comfortable spot for the English speaking traveler. Many businesses and locations have employees that have some level of English proficiency there as well, as San Jose is the capital and a big tourist spot. It's a good "base of operations" so to speak. Hope that helps! |
