Directions in costa rica?

Travel Info
I'm driving between Punta Islita near Puerto Carillo to Peace Lodge. How far is it and how long will it take? Thanks, Joe

Travel Tips
Get a GOOD map. Use a chart to calculate miles and KM's. You will find that many of the roads are not marked at all. A compass will come in handy as well. If you rent a car, get directions from the agency. Carry some $5 bills in your shirt pocket so when you get stopped at check points you can move on a little faster, rather then sit and answer questions for 30 minutes. The Policia will ask for your passport and then ask to see it again. The second time make sure there is a $5 bill inside and you'll be on your way.

I don't know the answer to this specific question, but I was in Costa Rica last spring and found that no matter where I went, it took at least twice as long as I expected to get where I was going, due to the poor condition of the roads. To go 60 km would take anywhere from 2-4 hours. There are a few really good roads but a LOT of really bad ones (potholes, etc). Find a map online and get the approx km, then multiply by 3... that's how many minutes it will probably take you to get there, on average :)

My advice: enjoy the drive! My husband and I were there for our honeymoon and drove all over - from San Jose to Arenal Volcano, to a little east coast town, Cahuita, then back to San Jose. The driving was almost as much fun as the destinations! Get a 4-wheel drive vehicle, though!! It's worth the extra money.

Oh yeah.. and we never had any trouble with check points - perhaps we were just lucky but we didn't get stopped anywhere, for any reason.
Buy three maps, average teh best two out of three for accuracy. It usually works and you need more than one. The other option is to arrange transportation and leave the map reading up to someone else!
