Although explored by the Spanish early in the 16th century, initial attempts at colonizing Costa Rica proved unsuccessful due to a combination of factors, including: disease from mosquito-infested swamps, brutal heat, resistance by natives, and pirate raids. It was not until 1563 that a permanent settlement of Cartago was established in the cooler, fertile central highlands. The area remained a colony for some two and a half centuries. In 1821, Costa Rica became one of several Central American provinces that jointly declared their independence from Spain. Two years later it joined the United Provinces of Central America, but this federation disintegrated in 1838, at which time Costa Rica proclaimed its sovereignty and independence.

In Pre-Columbian times the Indigenous people, in what is now known as Costa Rica, were part of the Intermediate Area located between the Mesoamerican and Andean cultural regions. This has recently been updated to include the influence of the Isthmo-Colombian area.

Costa Rica boasts a varied history. It was the point where the Mesoamerican and South American native cultures met. The northwest of the country, the Nicoya Peninsula, was the southernmost point of Nahuatl cultural influence when the Spanish invaders (conquistadores) came in the 16th century. The center and southern portions of the country had Chibcha influences. However, the indigenous people have influenced modern Costa Rican culture to a relatively small degree, as most of the Indians died from disease and mistreatment by the Spaniards.

Costa Rica was populated with African slaves in the 17th and 18th centuries, although most Caribbean Costa Ricans of African ascent descend from Jamaican workers brought in during the 19th century to work in the construction of railways connecting the urban populations of the Central Plateau to the port of Limon on the Caribbean coast.

The italian Cristobal Colon on 1502 on his forth and last voyage to America. He was the same one with his spanish crew who discovered Central America, the Caribeann and I think Venezuela and Colombia too.

To my knowledge no one Spanish explorer has been given credit for "finding" Costa Rica - whose name means "Rich Coast". It was discovered by a group of Spanish explorers looking for gold there. When they saw a lot of the natives wearing golden amulets and golden head bands on the coasts they named the country Costa Rica. The Jungle was too thick to be able to penetrate so these explorers never made into the internal part or the center of Costa Rica.

Unfortunately none of the natives were able to tell them how or where the gold came from despite the fact that there are many places that gold has actually been found in this country and much of it came into the country by way of trade with other tribes all thoughout the area in Central America.

There are even rivers there named "Rio d'oro" - meaning river of gold where gold has been found in them.

The person that gave the name to Costa Rica was Cristobal Colon or should i say Christopher Columbus.
When he got to Costa Rica he saw that the native indians from here were all wearing gold.
Most of them had alot of pearsings all full of gold, thats why he named it the Rich Coast which has the same meaning as Costa Rica because it was full of gold, but unfortanately alot of the gold got stolen from this country but there is still some left not as much as before though.
